Soccer Business Bits: EPL Viewing, FSC Deal & More

Hat tip to Dave Laidig for sending a couple of interesting business stories this way.  We’ll start with an extremely comprehensive look at Premier League viewing by  This site typically focuses on American soccer stories, but this analysis is so detailed, that as fans of the business side of the game, we think this breakdown is definitely worth the read.  According to the site, “Of the 18 live games in the period on Sky, the average audience was only just over 1m people per game. The best-watched game was Manchester United versus Liverpool with 1.844m, and the lowest audience being Bolton v Birmingham with 456,000. Over at ESPN, the ratings were much lower still, with a high number among five games in the period of 484,000 for United versus West Ham and a low of 273,000 for Aston Villa v Newcastle. DirecTV has announced a wide ranging deal with Fox that will include various RSNs, certain Fox channels and, most importantly for soccer fans, Fox Soccer.  According to the official press release from the satellite provider, “Fox Networks and DIRECTV have reached an agreement for DIRECTV to continue carrying all Fox Networks (including FX, National Geographic Channel, Nat Geo WILD, SPEED, FUEL TV, FOX Soccer, FOX Soccer Plus and FOX Deportes), Fox’s regional sports’ networks, Fox Broadcasting (FOX), the FOX local stations, Fox News Channel and Fox Business Network.”

Finally, Both Wednesday night playoff matches will be nationally televised.  Fox Soccer will have the KC match, while ESPN2 will carry the Seattle game.
