The Monday After: Howard Commercial and WPS/MLS Attendance

Time for our weekly wrap of the weekend that was the world of American soccer business. We’ll start in the world of sponsorship where new SUM partner Allstate is out with a series of spots involving USMNT keeper Tim Howard.  The ads focus on Howard’s inner thoughts about insurance and at least one version has already run as a television commercial.  There is also a two minute long look at the “making” of the commercials.  To see the ads, click here. In WPS action, there were three games on the weekend slate.  In Rochester, just over 2,100 saw new franchise Western New York defeat Atlanta.   Just over 1,000 were on hand in Florida for a magicjack victory while just under 3,000 were at Harvard University to see the Boston Breakers.

Another solid attendance week around MLS.  The weekend got started with a very strong 20,500 in Houston for a Friday night matchup.  The Saturday afternoon matchup in Philly brought more than 18,000 to PPL Park on a busy sports Saturday in Philly (the Phillies and Flyers were playing at the same time).  The Saturday night games saw just over 11k in Columbus and more than 20k at Red Bull Arena.  Colorado had just under 12k in the stands for their Saturday night matchup, Portland had more than 18, 500 and Seattle was in excess of 36k.    Saturday night closed out with more than 14k at the Home Depot Center for Chivas/NE.  The final game of the weekend saw almost 22k at a rain soaked Pizza Hut Park for the Galaxy road show.
