Soccer Business Bits: CBA Deadline Extended, Broadcast Soccer & More

Multiple sources are reporting on a new extension of the deadline to negotiate a new CBA between the Players Union and MLS.  The old agreement expired on January 31, but negotiations were extended until February 12.  The deadline has now been pushed back until February 25.  The deadline was extended because of the DC snow storms.  The parties were expected to meet on Wednesday but the weather intervened and that circumstance has been touted as the cause of the extension.

Earlier in the week, it was announced that Fox (the over the air version), will televise the 2010 Champions League final on May 22.  It will be the first Saturday Champions League final and the first broadcast on over the air American television.  The game had been scheduled to be broadcast on FX, but the network (which owns the American rights to three years of UEFA broadcasts), decided that the probable ratings bonanza might be worth a prime spot on the main network.  Last year ESPN attracted 1.4 million viewers for the midweek match.

Finally, Arlo White was officially announced as the “voice” of the Seattle Sounders.  The BBC Radio veteran will be heard on all Sounders television and radio broadcasts.
