On Christmas Eve we first wrote about the Houston Dynamo’s great effort to bring soccer to grief stricken Newtown, Connecticut. Since that time, the magnitude of the event has snowballed, and now representatives of at least 11 Major League Soccer franchises, including luminaries such as Landon Donovan and Brian Ching will be in attendance. In addition, big names such as Mia Hamm and Cobi Jones will join the event.
“The event, first started by Houston Dynamo president Chris Canetti, a native of Guilford, Conn., is scheduled for Monday and is open only to Newtown residents and members of the town’s youth soccer association, according to the MLS website. Children and families of Newtown will have a chance to meet the professional and national players in attendance, and play alongside them in a variety of soccer activities.” For more on the event itself, click here.
Like many, I have found the events in Newtown to be among the most distressing in my lifetime. I want to take this opportunity to commend those involved in this event for their good acts and offer my hope that the night brings some joy to those in that community. The business of soccer includes the charitable good works of its teams and players, and this event is a shining example of good that athletes and professional sports can provide in the community. Kudos to the Houston Dynamo for spearheading this effort. Team General Manager Chris Canetti is a Connecticut native and he will lead the Dynamo delegation. The Qunnipiac University soccer team will also be involved in the event.
