Monday After

An exciting week of soccer for MLS, with the playoffs in full swing, a full slate of nationally televised games, a snow delay and more.  Before we get to the playoffs, here are a few other business items from the last few days.  We’ll start with playoff tv numbers, where ESPN2 saw just over 420k viewers for the Galaxy clincher over the Earthquakes.  The first game in that series drew 335k viewers.  The NBC Sports network has averaged about 120k for their playoff games.  For more on tv numbers, click here.

Now onto Columbus, where a franchise that has struggled at the gate and with media communication has made a number of new hires in the last week.  From the team press release:  “[t]he Columbus Crew today announced five new hires within the club’s front office. In recent weeks the organization has welcomed Alex Caulfield to its ranks as Senior Director of Communications, alongside Sarah Ozello, who assumes the role of Executive Assistant to Crew President and General Manager Mark McCullers.  Additionally, the Sales staff welcomes Andrew Flynn as a Season Ticket Account Executive, as well as Ticket Sales Representatives Doug Holmes and Donny Lewis.”

Finally, a quick look at attendance numbers over the last week, including the bizarre snow delay in New York.  Sporting’s playoff dreams crashed down at LiveStrong Sporting Park despite a crowd of almost 21k.   The other number one seed fell short before a sellout crowd of 10,700 at Buck Shaw.   The Red Bulls announced a crowd of over 14k for their Thursday night game against DC, while RSL reported a crowd just shy of 20k as they crashed out of the playoffs against Seattle.   On Sunday, the Dynamo blew past the 22k number for their dismantling of DC at BBVA Compass.
