Soccer Business Bits: New Shirt Sponsor, ESPN Grabs a Game & More

July 2, 2010

The New England Revolution may not yet have a shirt sponsor, but their WPS counterparts, the Boston Breakers, now do.  The franchise has announced a jersey sponsorship with Connecticut based Foxwoods Resort and Casino. In addition to prominent placement on the Breakers’s jerseys, Foxwoods will also have permanent signage at Harvard Stadium and a spot on the Breakers’ website.  Foxwoods employees will also receive ticket discounts to Breakers’ home games.

Foxwoods is a very prominent destination in New England and an impressive sponsor for the fledgling franchise.  According to Robert Victoria, Chief Marketing Officer for Mashantucket Pequot Gaming Enterprises,   “This agreement provides us with a great way extend our brand in the New England marketplace in a compelling way and we’re looking forward to working together with the team on a number of innovative community initiatives and events.”

With the Landon Donovan show well underway nationwide, ESPN has jumped on the bandwagon by adding the Galaxy/Sounders game on July 4 to their lineup of games.  The 10:30 p.m. start  will be broadcast on the ESPN2 and will feature the MLS returns of Edson Buddle and Donovan.  It will be interesting to see how much effort ESPN/ABC put into promoting a game tha promises to be a good showcase of Major League Soccer.

Finally, reports indicate that the first MLS game televised on ESPN since the World Cup drew approximately 330,000 viewers on Sunday Afternoon.  The game featured the opening of PPL Park and saw the home Union defeat the visiting Sounders.  Seattle is typically a good television draw  and the numbers are slightly higher than the pre-World Cup average.  The TFC/Houston game will also provide interesting insight into the television popularity of soccer.
